…an unforgettable experience in the Land of Eternal Spring!

Focus on Mexico has put together a unique and exciting program offering you the opportunity to investigate an alternative location that has fondly become known as:

“One of the Last Best Places on Earth”
1. What is a 'Focus on Mexico’ program?

Your 8-Day Focus on Mexico program provides you with the opportunity to get all the information and experience you need in one spot to make an informed decision as to whether Mexico is right for you, PLUS have a lot of fun doing it.

Certainly, you can visit Lake Chapala on your own but it would be near impossible to assemble all of the Experts you will meet during a Focus program. On a program you will attend a number of seminars given by our Expert Guest Speakers covering all topics that would be important for anyone considering making a move (or spending serious time) in a new country. You’ll receive a valuable resource manual for future reference. You’ll attend informal ‘University @ the Bar’ sessions where you learn from locals (people who have come before you) as to why they came, hear their experiences and ask them your questions. We’ll show you the villages and what it’s like to live here and all the things there are to do. You’ll dine at the best restaurants and participate in cultural events and activities.

Our programs offer the perfect balance to allow you to have a wonderful vacation and insightful experience; all the while learning everything you need to decide whether Mexico is the place you want to spend ‘the best years of your life’. You will have fun, have a fabulous and entertaining experience and meet a variety of interesting people; many who will become new friends.

Our programs offer exceptional value at an affordable price. There simply is no better way to experience Mexico and find out in one short period everything we offer on a Focus Program.

Our ‘Focus on Mexico’ programs are the culmination of over 10 years of research and experience. We have had the pleasure of bringing groups to the Lake Chapala area since 1996; introducing hundreds and hundreds of people to our little pocket of paradise. Over and over our clients tell us they could never have obtained all the information we presented, nor could they have experienced everything they did on a Focus program on their own.

This is not a just a sightseeing tour (although you will see lots), not just a vacation (but you’ll have lots of fun), not a captive real estate sales mission (there is no pressure to buy). It is a delightful educational experience designed to show you what it is like to live in the Lake Chapala area of Mexico. During the program we will show you what it would take months and months to find out on your own, plus even more that you may never discover on your own. A Focus program is the best way to get it all, in one fell swoop.
2. Why should you come on a 'Focus on Mexico’ program?

We have told many people that Mexico is constantly changing and mostly for the better. This requires constant research and continuous updating of information. Sometimes changes are well publicized but quite often they are not and the general population is not aware of the changes.

Continually we meet people who have come to the area and have either had problems getting the information they want or have got incorrect information. This is quite understandable when you consider that a lot of information is obtained from people who ‘live here’ but who are not in the position to get updated on changes.

We also come across people who have been given information that, while being correct, is incomplete. For example, recently we met a person who had been told they could buy a property even though they only had a Tourist Visa. While this information is correct, there is a significant piece missing. Had this person bought the property and, as planned, retained it as an investment and visited occasionally (on Tourist Visas), when they sold the property they would be subject to up to 29% Capital Gains Tax which can be avoided if done correctly.

Not all incorrect information can be so costly but, as the old saying goes “a little knowledge can be dangerous”.

It is our job at Focus to have the correct and current information and, through our programs, ensure that our clients make decisions based on accurate information.

You may be deciding to make a major change in your life. Please don’t make it based on bad information. We can help you make an informed decision but only if we get to meet you. Be safe and book on one of our “Focus on Mexico Programs”. We will keep you out of trouble.

Focus clients give us top marks!:

When we decided to go with a Focus on Mexico program, we did so with more than our share of reservations. We were concerned about being in a highly organized pre-planned program since all of our previous travel experiences had been somewhat open-ended and improvisational. How mistaken we were! The program, the food and lodging, and the professionalism of our hosts were all outstanding. We are so thankful that we followed our instincts about the down to earth sincerity and integrity of the people at Focus.

For anyone considering living in Mexico whether full or part time, the Focus on Mexico program is an extremely worthwhile venture. We don’t know how long it would take an individual to put together all the information we were given, but we’re convinced it would take a great deal of time! All the legal, cultural, medical and real estate information about Mexico one could ever need was presented to us by a team of highly skilled, experienced, practicing professionals. And yet, despite the fullness of the program, at no time were we subjected to any pressure to buy property or visit real estate sites. In addition, Georgina, our Focus Program director, together with Manuel (a beautiful person and a superb bus driver), guided us throughout the trip with unflagging energy and an enthusiasm so infectious that a strong esprit-de-corps developed among us almost instantly.

The food and lodging exceeded everyone’s expectations. In conversations with other tour members, many of us wondered how so much value for our money was possible.

We highly recommend the Focus on Mexico program and the Lake Chapala area of Mexico to anyone.

4. What you will experience…

A. Education
The Education portion will provide the information you need to know about living in Lake Chapala. You will hear first hand from Experts on topics including Health Care, Banking & Investments, Immigration, Real Estate, The Mexican Legal System, Insurance, Cost of Living, How to handle your financial affairs, and a myriad of other important information. Our Q & A sessions provide answers to your specific questions. As a sample, you’ll learn:

. The Mexican Health Care System and how you can qualify.

. Should you put money in a Mexican bank.

. What to watch for when buying or renting (how to keep out of trouble).

. The various types of immigration visas and which one will will allow capital gains exemption.

. How to save $$ on insurance and what to do if you are in an accident.

. How to manage your finances from Mexico. How to set up and pay bills online, securely.

. How to handle your Wills (Do you need one in Mexico?).

. What about the taxes? Implications of American/Canadian Tax Treaties with Mexico?

. Americans - find out if you can buy your dream home in Mexico through your IRA. Learn whether write-offs on property you own are treated differently in Mexico.

. Canadians - find out about the 'non-residency tax system in Canada'. (Never pay Capital Gains Tax again. Reduce taxes on pensions down to 15%, possibly saving enough over time to actually pay for that dream home in the sunshine.)

. Q & A session to ask your personal questions. You'll get all the answers.

The seminars alone are more than worth the price of the trip.

University @ the Bar sessions where local residents tell you what it's like to live here. You'll learn about the culture, the history, activities and things to do, organizations to belong to and tons of other useful information about living in Mexico. All aspects of life in Lake Chapala will be covered so you will get the whole perspective.

You'll be able to talk informally with local residents and find out how they manage with the language, how easy (or hard) it was for them to make the move, what stuff did they leave behind or just have to bring with them. Find out how they handle a new culture, how welcome and safe they feel living and traveling in Mexico. Ask them your own questions and learn through their experience.

Focus Resource Manual. Chock full of important information for everything you need to know about living in Mexico and a valuable list of contacts for when you make the move. You'll find information covered in the Seminars as well as a wealth of other information and articles to make the transition seamless.

This will serve as a very valuable resource for years to come. {Important Note: The Focus Resource Manual and other resource material are not available in any bookstore, ONLY through attending a “Focus on Mexico” program}

B. Experience and Participation

Although you will gain a wealth of knowledge and valuable contacts on a Focus program, let us assure you that it is certainly not all work and no play. You'll Experience plenty of outings around the Lake Chapala area to give you the opportunity to see how people live.

You'll discover over 50 English-speaking organizations to belong to, numerous shops and boutiques to wander through, wonderful galleries and crafts, sculptures and paintings from talented local artists, both from the Mexican and foreign communities. Ajijic in particular, has long been known as a haven for artists, poets, artisans and musicians. Many say the Lake Chapala area is their inspiration.

Through Participation you'll attend cultural activities like the famed Ballet Folkloric (when available) or a visit to the mysterious Monte Coxala Spa & Pyramids - thermal underground hot springs. You'll visit Tlacapaque, the famous arts and crafts center next to Guadalajara. You'll see the wonderful architecture and historic buildings; masterpieces from the past.
C. Food and Entertainment

Restaurants Galore. One of the really special treats in the Lake Chapala area is the incredible abundance of excellent restaurants offering a wide variety of cuisine from Argentinean, French, Italian, Peruvian, Greek, German, Chinese, Japanese (even Sushi), International, English Fish & Chips, good old fashioned home cooking and of course Mexican.

You'll have the pleasure of sampling some of the best during your stay on a Focus program. The only complaint we have ever received on our programs is we provide too much excellent food. We don't apologize. Come hungry! Many of our participants refer to the Focus program as a 'Cruise on Land'. Don't worry, we offer physical activities to work it off along the way.

Entertainment. Many of the restaurants have live entertainment: from Mariachi, Country, Jazz, Oldies, Ball Room, Irish, Rock & Roll, Big Band, and Easy Listening (you name it). Many well known artists, writers, poets, painters and actors live or visit here and quite often entertain in local establishments. You never know who you might see.

Don’t be surprised if you meet Ron Baker, who played guitar for Charlie Pride for years, and has teamed up with the sweet voice of Carol Bedford - performing regularly at La Bodega. (This restaurant is a favorite on our program.)

You'll attend a welcome cocktail party to give everyone a chance to get to know other participants and Focus staff. (If at all possible please try to arrive in the afternoon in order to be able to attend the 6:15 p.m. Greeting Cocktail party, followed by an early dinner at the hotel.)
Having lived here almost eleven years, we have garnered a wealth of knowledge and contacts and are more than happy to share our information and assist you in every way possible, both during the program and after - should you decide to spend time in Lake Chapala.

Although Focus on Mexico is a business, for us, one of the greatest rewards of what we do is helping people get a new lease on life and introducing them to our pocket of paradise. When people come up to us, time and again, to thank us for introducing them to this area and telling us how much they enjoy living here, it is reinforced to us why we continue to do what we do. We have made a lot of lasting friendships with Focus participants.

D. Orientation of Lake Chapala and Real Estate Tour
houses
What we do on our Focus programs is give you a full orientation of the Lakeside so you get the lay of the land and see where things are. Then we give you a presentation on construction and architecture so you can understand and appreciate the differences and we point out things you need to watch for.
We'll take you on a real estate tour where you'll have the chance to see 'behind the walls', inside homes and developments in various locations so you can get a feel for the different styles of construction and types of neighborhoods as well as an idea of values and prices. We'll point out which areas are more popular and which are not so popular, and why. You'll see older homes in established neighborhoods and new homes being built. You'll get a broad perspective from condo apartments and town homes to single family homes in the villages and newer homes in gated communities. You'll see the construction process and learn how different it is from north of the border.
This gives you enough rounded information to keep you out of trouble. Then for those that are more serious about real estate, we arrange for appointments with the realtors we use (and recommend) to take you out one-on-one to show you properties specific to your needs. You will never be subjected to any pressure to buy real estate on one of our Programs. We leave that decision to you.
Two other related aspects that we deal with, amongst others, are Immigration and Legal System. It is important to know which Visa to go for to ensure you are Capital Gains Exempt when you sell, plus what other things you need to do in addition to the visa (that most people are just not aware of) to make sure of this exemption. Our legal expert will walk you through the process of taking title and what is involved - beneficiaries, direct deed or trust or in a company name and the pros and cons of each.
You'll get to know the area and many places of interest. We'll escort you through the villages that lie along Lake Chapala so you can compare the differences.

One of the attractions of Mexican architecture is homes here are individual, each with their own style and personality, not so much mass produced where they all look the same. In fact, it is interesting to note that in Mexican Universities instructing in architecture, they are teaching architects to design homes around their client's personality and lifestyle and not just their needs.

The total program is designed to show you what it is like to live in Mexico. After all, isn’t that the experience you want?

5. After the Program - Focus Alumni Support Program
For those who attend a Focus on Mexico Program, many of you will cross over the threshold and experience the ‘Magic of the Lakeside’. For those that do, it won’t be long before you will want to make the move, or at least start spending significant time in our little paradise. And you won’t be alone! The Focus network will be at your service. Get everything you need in one place – ONE STOP – "FocusOnMexico.com".

Living long past the program date, our Alumni Support Program provides support to those people who decide to live here. The network of Focus contacts and other Alumni will help make the transition smooth and seamless and a pleasant experience.

We are developing a separate section of the website that will be accessible by Focus Alumni, which will be filled with practical information for everyday living. A central source where you can find the information and contacts you need. Things like: What are the labor laws? What benefits are your maid and gardener entitled too, like Christmas bonuses and holiday pay. Who can drive your vehicle and who can't? Recommendations from other Alumni: favorite restaurants, hangouts and side trips. Wonderful personal stories, recipes, etc. In general, the information you'd need if you are going to live here.

Focus makes the transition smooth and seamless.

6. Can you afford NOT to take advantage of a Focus on Mexico program?
In the many hundreds of seminars we have given in the past, and here on our website, we point out that Mexico is not for everyone. It is different in many ways and each person needs to experience these differences before making their choice. Those of us, who have allowed the Magic of Mexico to touch our hearts and have chosen to spend the best of our lives here, feel privileged. We have not only adapted to, but have ‘embraced’ the differences and are enjoying the many, many benefits available to us.

There is no other program that offers such a fully comprehensive package. If Mexico is on your radar screen -Focus is the best way to get you there.

“Mexico is the next destination of the Baby Boomer generation. And ‘Focus on Mexico’ is the best way to get there. Whether it’s real estate (buying or renting), immigration advice, health care, legal matters – or just about anything else, the friendly Focus on Mexico group can provide these services with expertise and at a ridiculously low cost. Canadians and Americans couldn’t hope for better.”
