Here in Mexico’s Lake Chapala area our rainy season runs from approximately June 15 to October 15 varying slightly from year to year. For instance in 2018 it rained all the way through Day of the Dead in November, and 2017 when the rainy season was mostly over by September 30. In 2019, we saw serious flooding in many areas of Mexico and several severe hail storms including one in Guadalajara that left almost 4 feet of hail on the streets. That one made the international news! 2024 was another near record amount of rainfall – good thing, since the previous year had very little and the Lake was getting low!
Lakeside Rainy Season
The Lakeside rainy season is distinct due to the micro climate created by the surrounding mountains and proximity of the lake, making storms less severe. We sometimes get loud thunder and lightning storms, almost always in the middle of the night, but they are never as dramatic as in other areas of Mexico.
Those who live here year-round and our visiting sunbirds escaping extreme temperatures north of the border are big fans of the rainy season. The cool mornings are delicious and unlike the brown landscape of much of the dry season, we are surrounded by lush green hillsides. Temperatures generally range from a low of ~65 degrees to a high of ~80, an ideal temperate climate. Although the humidity is, of course, higher than in the dry season, our altitude of 5,000 feet moderates that nicely. We never have the type of humidity encountered in many parts of the U.S. midwest, northeast and southeast (or coastal Mexico). Another plus is that the rains almost always come at night, often between 2-6 a.m. leaving behind a bright cool morning with temperatures slowly rising during the day.

My wife and I recently participated in the Focus on Mexico on line program that covered topics related to moving to Mexico. We have to say it was an excellent program. The topics were presented in a clear and concise way that were timely and detailed. Programs such as Health Care in Mexico, Immigration, Renting or Buying a Home, and more, provided critical information that would have taken weeks, if not longer to discover on our own. The huge advantage was the ability to hear actual, on the ground, professionals such as Doctors, Lawyers and Real Estate Agents in Ajjic and Chapala describe the ins and outs of Mexico. The ability to watch the program from the comforts of home and then have the ability to re-watch the topics is a huge advantage. The cost of the program is worth every penny when you consider the time saved and information provided that will keep you from making costly mistakes later in your journey to Mexico. Kudos to Michael and all the Focus on Mexico presenters. Very well done. Steve and Elena G
